How to choose your Sidemount instructor!!!
As it seems, more and more people are getting involved with sidemount diving.
Others trying to train themselves by themselves and other by taking a course.
Others trying to train themselves by themselves and other by taking a course.
Many of both categories are asking me several information like what BCD to use, how is it possible to manage the buoyancy in case of no wing but only harness, how to adjust their cylinders etc.
I would like to notice that no information is enough to give you all these things that you need to know and to perform for being a real sidemount diver!! The only proper way to learn about sidemount is to take a course from a very experienced instructor.
Inproper configuration. You are like this when you train yourself!!! |
The instructor‘s sidemount experience has nothing to do, on how many years he is diving or teaching. There were many cases to my sidemount career that experienced technical, trimix or even rebreather divers had difficulties, at least in the beginning of their training, trying to perform all these new things that have to do with the buoyancy, the trim, the body positioning, the fining techniques, the equipment adjustment and configuration and the most important the way that they were thinking on how to properly use all these new staff. So your primary concern is to find an experienced and active SIDEMOUNT diver that he / she is also SIDEMOUNT instructor!!!
The instructor of your choice has to be at least an active Cave and/or wreck penetration diver & instructor so to be able to explain you the importance of the buoyancy, trim, propulsion techniques and cylinder‘s trimming because otherwise you will just learn how to carry one or two cylinder on the side. Not how to SIDEMOUNT!!
Your instructor must be active Trimix diver and instructor so to be able to properly train you on how to manage the narcosis, that exists from the first meter. He has to be able to explain you how to manage the cold water, the equipment issues like the regulator exchange or the proper use of the long hose, the safety procedures etc. He has to have dive to the double depth, of the depth he will conduct the training
REMEMBER!! If there is even one small think that you forget, this is narcosis!!!
The instructor of your choice has to diving and giving courses in several environments like open water, not only in swimming pools, in deep diving not only confined water, into wrecks, not only though cars and airplanes, in caves, not only in lakes and why not to be a speleologist because as speleologist he should have learned how to properly pass restrictions and narrow areas!!!
Your instructor must be at least an active rebreather diver, not just to have tried rebreather, because it will be more efficient for him to explain you the proper breathing technique to manage your buoyancy!!!
Thanks for reading and remember...
